About Spiritual Psychosis
Have you ever looked up at the stars and wished that some benevolent, Higher-Dimensional Force would step in and make sense of the chaos down here on Earth?
This longing for a direct rescue is a core human instinct.
It is found in modern esoteric circles, UFO forums, and most recently, in the gripping South Korean thriller series Glitch on Netflix.
But as Glitch brilliantly illustrates, there is a dangerously thin line between seeking a higher cosmic truth and falling into what psychologists call Spiritual Psychosis.
The Story of Glitch: Awakening or Breakdown?
In Glitch, the main character, Hong Ji-hyo, is a normal office worker whose life is derailed when she starts seeing a recurring vision of a little gray alien.
No one else can see this creature, leaving the audience to constantly wonder:
Is she experiencing genuine extraterrestrial contact, or is she having a psychological breakdown?
Her search for answers leads her into the path of a religious cult called the Church of the Divine Light.
This group worships aliens and believes that a chosen Messiah will help them discard their physical bodies and ascend to the stars.
The cult members are desperate for a direct rescue from Earth's suffering.
This setup serves as a perfect narrative mirror for a real-world phenomenon that mental health professionals see all too often.
What is Spiritual Psychosis?
When an intense metaphysical exploration or a "Spiritual Awakening" overwhelms the nervous system's capacity to process reality, it can cross the line into a crisis.
In transpersonal psychology, this is known as Spiritual Psychosis or a Spiritual Emergency.
It occurs when the mind attempts to process profound or existential concepts without a solid psychological anchor.
Instead of expanding a person's empathy and awareness, it narrows their focus into dangerous cognitive distortions:
Loss of Reality Testing: The individual is unable to consider logical, grounded explanations for their unusual experiences, viewing their internal visions as absolute, unshakeable truth.
The Messianic Complex: Like the cult leaders in Glitch, the
person develops a fixed belief that they have been uniquely chosen by higher forces for a special cosmic mission.
Severe Hypervigilance: Believing that one is caught in a war between cosmic forces puts the brain into a constant "fight or flight" state.
The resulting sleep deprivation and stress only accelerate the break from reality.
The Non-Intervention Paradox: Why the Forces of Light Don’t Step In
A major theme in both the series Glitch and real-world esoteric philosophy is the non-intervention paradox.
Followers of channeled materials like the Law of One often ask:
If benevolent Cosmic Forces are real, why do they let their messengers suffer through extreme isolation or mental collapse?
The answer lies in the Universal Law of Free Will.
In these belief systems, higher-dimensional beings operate under a strict non-intervention directive.
They cannot violate human sovereignty or step in to erase personal suffering.
To do so would nullify the soul's chosen learning curriculum on Earth.
In Glitch, the characters are forced to navigate terrifying, real-world dangers entirely on their own.
The cosmic beings don’t swoop in to stop the cult or save the day.
The message is clear: Growth, rescue, and healing must come from grounded, human action.
Escaping the Matrix: The Importance of Grounding
The ultimate danger of high-stress spiritual beliefs is spiritual bypassing, using the Cosmos to escape human pain.
When we ignore our mental health, financial struggles, or personal isolation in favor of searching for a celestial savior, we leave ourselves vulnerable to psychological collapse.
As Glitch shows us, the antidote to getting lost in the stars is grounding ourselves in the physical world.
For Ji-hyo, it isn't the aliens that save her, but the loyalty and real-world support of her childhood friend.
True spiritual maturity isn't about escaping the human experience; it is about having the courage to face it.
No external force is coming to rescue us from our physical challenges.
The responsibility to heal, adapt, and build a better reality remains entirely in human hands.
